Guerrillero Heroico

"I remember it as if it were today: seeing him framed in
the view finder; with that expression; I am still startled by the
impact... [it] shakes me so powerfully."

"Che was not visible; he was standing behind the rostrum. But for a moment there was an empty space in the front row, and in the background the figure of Che appeared. He unexpectedly entered my viewfinder and I shot the photo horizontally. I immediately realised that the image of him was almost a portrait, with the clear sky behind him."

"I decided to watch from the crowd and used my Leica with its medium telephoto lens. I panned the podium and suddenly Che moved forward into my camera. I made a picture, and immediately thinking for a cover of our newspaper, turned the camera vertical, made another - and the moment had gone."

V-J Day In Times Square

I was walking through the crowds on V-J Day, looking for pictures. I noticed a sailor coming my way. He was grabbing every female he could find and kissing them all — young girls and old ladies alike. Then I noticed the nurse, standing in that enormous crowd. I focused on her, and just as I'd hoped, the sailor came along, grabbed the nurse, and bent down to kiss her. Now if this girl hadn't been a nurse, if she'd been dressed dark clothes, I wouldn't have had a picture. The contrast between her white dress and the sailor's dark uniform gives the photograph its extra impact.

Candle In The Wind - 2

    Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
    While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
    When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
    Your legend ever did

    Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
    Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
    Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

    Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
